TOUR MEMORY My friends all told me a Dead show was a strange place to take a date. Of
course I paid them no heed. I figured music and love conquer all. When they
covered Keep on Growing, the Derek and the Dominos classic, my date looked
at me and grabbed my hand. She didn’t let go until the last sweet notes of
Brokedown Palace. Contrary to my friends’ admonitions, this date worked on
all levels. |

TOUR MEMORY I’ll always remember this Swing Auditorium show as the concert where I
crossed the line from Dead fan to Deadhead. What I remember musically was
Friend of the Devil. I was used to the standard studio version, essentially
bluegrass. What I got was the slow but powerful treatment. It was
staggering. This was the moment when I fully realized the incredible soul of
Jerry Garcia. |

County Field Highgate VT TOUR MEMORY
One of the best parts about being on tour is the tour itself, the
experience. Lack of a concrete itinerary is part of the charm. The Highgate
show reaffirmed my faith in humanity. Some kind local souls took us in,
giving us food and a place to crash. It’s funny, I can’t remember a single
tune they did that night, but I’ll never forget the friends we made in the
green mountains of Vermont. |
