As Time Goes
By Collector Box Set of 6 Raggedy Ann Dolls -
Limited Edition of 7,500 sets. Each Doll in the set is numbered.
P. F. Volland Co., 1918-1934: Cartoonist Johnny Gruelle patented his
famous rag doll in 1915, but it was not until three years later that the P.
F. Volland Company introduced the first commercially produced Raggedy Ann.
Each charmingly primitive doll had shoe-button eyes and a "candy" heart
stuffed inside her soft body (the hearts were really cardboard).
Exposition Doll & Toy Mfg. Co., 1935: Gruelle's next doll licensee was the
Exposition Doll & Toy Mfg. Company, whose Raggedy Ann had printed pie-cut
eyes with no eyebrows or eyelashes. Her hair had a burgundy tint, and she
wore felt shoes. The Exposition doll was the only commercially made Raggedy
Ann without a heart. This rare doll was produced for less than one year.
Molly-E's Doll Outfitters, 1934-1937: Exposition's short term as a
manufacturer of Raggedy Ann was due to unfair competition from unauthorized
dolls by Molly-E's Doll Outfitters. The attractive Molly-E's Raggedy Ann
had printed eyes that glanced to one side, multicolored stripes on her legs,
and distinctive blue shoes. She was the very first to have a heart, solid
red, printed on her chest. Georgene Novelties, Inc., 1938-1962: Next
came Georgene Novelties, who restored button eyes to the doll. This was the
first company to add the words "I Love You" to Raggedy Ann's printed heart.
During the years that Georgene made Raggedy Ann, the doll's face changed
often, but her heart remained constant. Knickerbocker Toy Company,
1963-1982: Perhaps the best known manufacturer of Raggedy Ann was
Knickerbocker: Their doll had a simple geometric face, with an appealingly
direct smile. The pocket that is found on every Knickerbocker doll's apron
shows the company's attention to detail. Applause and Dakin,
1980-2004: Applause began making Raggedy Ann dolls in 1980, and continued
this tradition until 2004. Many handcrafted Raggedy Anns have embroidered
faces, but Applause was the first commercial maker to add this quality
feature to many of their dolls. In 1999, Raggedy Ann became part of the
Dakin Signature collection which continued to proudly create many styles of
Raggedy Ann & Andy Dolls. |
